These days, it takes years of hard work and dedication to bag yourself a job as a dentist. But it hasn’t always been so difficult to bag a job in the tooth pulling industry.
During the 1700s in England, it was actually mainly blacksmiths who worked as dentists(although barbers and wig makers would dabble in the work too) . They would build their own tools, including forceps and keys, which resembled traditional door keys.
These keys (pictured above) looked almost identical to a typical door key. They’d also be used in a similar way – the blacksmith would hook the key onto the tooth and then twist the key like you would in a door. Ouch.
